Meta Reverses Instagram Encryption: Full Details of the May 2026 Change

Meta is rolling back one of its more ambitious privacy features. End-to-end encryption for Instagram direct messages will be discontinued starting May 8, 2026, according to a recent update on Meta’s help page. The change ends a short chapter in Instagram’s privacy history that began in 2023.

The feature was the result of Zuckerberg’s 2019 pledge to make encrypted messaging a core part of Meta’s ecosystem. However, it never gained meaningful traction on Instagram, largely because users had to opt in. Meta has now cited this low uptake as the defining reason for its removal.

From May onwards, all Instagram DMs will be readable by Meta. The company had previously been restricted from accessing messages sent by users who had enabled encryption. This division will cease to exist under the new policy.

Law enforcement agencies, particularly those focused on combating child exploitation, had pushed for this result. The FBI, Interpol, and the Australian federal police were among those who argued the feature was being misused. Child safety organizations have broadly supported the removal.

Privacy and digital rights groups are not satisfied, however. They argue the removal of encryption makes users more vulnerable, not safer. Analysts also point out that Meta may eventually use DM content for advertising, given the commercial pressures the company faces.
