India and Canada Advance Trade Agreement Talks with October Meetings

India and Canada are intensifying their negotiations on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), with significant diplomatic activities planned for the coming weeks. As part of these efforts, Canadian Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu is scheduled to visit New Delhi in mid-October to meet with Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal. This visit follows the fifth round of CEPA discussions, which are set to occur in Canada starting October 5.

The upcoming talks mark an important phase in the ongoing trade negotiations, as officials from both countries have already reached consensus on several critical issues. However, unresolved matters will require deliberations at the ministerial level, underscoring the importance of Sidhu’s visit. During this time, a Canadian trade delegation will also travel to India to explore business and investment opportunities, reflecting the broader economic cooperation between the two nations.

India and Canada initially launched CEPA negotiations in March 2026, and the discussions have progressed through four rounds, with the most recent taking place in New Delhi from September 14 to 18. The proposed agreement aims to significantly enhance bilateral trade and investment, building on the $30.4 billion in goods and services traded between the two countries in 2025. Both governments have set an ambitious target to increase this figure to $70 billion by 2030.

The renewed focus on CEPA negotiations aligns with efforts to bolster India-Canada economic relations in various sectors, including energy, clean technology, life sciences, aerospace, pharmaceuticals, and manufacturing. The outcome of these discussions could pave the way for deeper collaboration and economic ties between the two nations, fostering growth in key industries.
