India-Canada Trade Surges as Modi’s December Visit Approaches

Merchandise trade between India and Canada has experienced a significant boost, with double-digit growth recorded in the first eight months of 2026. This surge in economic activity comes as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares for a visit to Canada in December, highlighting strengthened bilateral relations.

Canada’s merchandise exports to India reached CA$3.03 billion from January to August 2026, marking a 36.7% increase compared to the same period last year. The primary exports were metals and minerals, comprising 41% of shipments, followed by agri-food products at 16.9%. Meanwhile, Canada’s imports from India totaled CA$7.05 billion, reflecting a 10.2% year-on-year rise.

In 2025, Canadian exports to India were valued at CA$3.9 billion, while imports from India stood at CA$9.7 billion, showcasing the expanding trade dynamics. This growth is underpinned by high-level discussions and business initiatives, including a Canadian trade delegation of nearly 300 participants, which secured 34 commercial agreements worth approximately CA$300 million. These agreements span sectors such as energy, critical minerals, and aerospace.

The two nations are also engaged in advancing negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), having completed five rounds of talks. Further discussions are anticipated as both countries work towards concluding the agreement by December.

Prime Minister Modi and his Canadian counterpart, Mark Carney, have engaged in conversations to enhance bilateral relations, with officials from both countries striving to expand trade, investment, and cooperation in areas like mobility. The ongoing economic dialogue and agreements underscore a mutual commitment to strengthening ties and fostering economic growth.
