India-US Trade Continues to Grow Amid Ongoing Tariff Discussions

India’s trade relations with the United States continue to strengthen, with merchandise exports to the U.S. increasing by 11.1% to $50.81 billion between April and September 2026, as reported by India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry. During the same period, imports from the U.S. saw an even more significant rise of 26%, reaching $32.33 billion. Despite this growth, India’s trade surplus with the U.S. narrowed to $18.48 billion, down from $20.07 billion the previous year.

The United States remains India’s largest export destination during the first half of the financial year. This robust trade activity occurs amid ongoing negotiations for a proposed India-U.S. trade agreement. According to Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal, the discussions are progressing positively, with both countries eager to finalize the deal as soon as possible. However, the agreement’s completion will depend on developments within the broader U.S. tariff framework, including the ongoing Section 301 process.

India is seeking preferential access to the American market through the proposed trade agreement. This access is intended to bolster domestic exporters, allowing them to compete more effectively on an international scale. The agreement aims to enhance market access and strengthen trade relations while addressing existing tariff-related challenges.

The potential trade agreement marks a significant step in deepening economic ties between the two nations. As both countries work towards concluding the deal, the focus remains on ensuring that it addresses key issues, including tariff barriers that have historically affected bilateral trade.

Overall, the increase in trade between India and the U.S. reflects a positive trajectory in their economic relationship, despite uncertainties surrounding tariffs. As negotiations advance, both parties are hopeful for a resolution that will further enhance their trade partnership.
