TRAI Mandates Flexible Recharge Options with 30-Day and Voice-Only Plans

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has unveiled new regulations aimed at providing prepaid mobile users with more flexible recharge options. Under the Telecom Consumers Protection (Thirteenth Amendment) Regulations, 2026, telecom operators like Airtel, Jio, and Vodafone Idea are mandated to offer new voice-and-SMS-only plans with validity periods of 30 days or less, as well as monthly plans that renew on the same date each month.

These changes are designed to cater to consumers who primarily use their phones for calls and messages, rather than mobile data. The introduction of these plans is part of a broader effort to enhance consumer choice, especially for senior citizens and users seeking economical plans that do not include data services.

TRAI’s initiative also requires that operators provide at least one longer-duration voice-and-SMS-only plan that matches the validity of their more extended data-bundled plans. This directive follows previous guidance issued by TRAI in December 2024, which found that telecom operators had not sufficiently expanded voice-and-SMS-only plans across various validity periods.

By ensuring that monthly plans renew on the same date each month, TRAI aims to eliminate the confusion that arises when plans renew on varying dates. If the corresponding date does not exist in a month, the plan is set to renew on the last day of that month, ensuring a consistent billing cycle for consumers.

These regulatory updates are expected to provide consumers with greater flexibility and choice in selecting mobile plans that best suit their usage patterns and financial considerations, marking a significant step towards consumer empowerment in the telecommunications sector.
