India and Poland Strengthen Defence and Technology Ties, Eye Trade Growth

India and Poland have embarked on a strategic collaboration to enhance their partnership in defence, space, nuclear energy, and advanced technologies. This initiative was reinforced during discussions between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, with an emphasis on doubling bilateral trade by 2030.

The dialogue between the two leaders highlighted the potential for joint development and production in sectors such as defence equipment, space technology, and nuclear energy. They also addressed cooperation in critical minerals, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and fintech. Prime Minister Modi extended an invitation to Polish companies to engage in co-development and co-production initiatives, while Prime Minister Tusk underscored the importance of diversifying access to critical minerals and strategic resources to bolster economic security.

Currently, the bilateral trade between India and Poland stands at approximately $6.3 billion. Both nations aim to increase this figure twofold by the end of the decade. A delegation comprising nearly 100 Polish companies is actively exploring business opportunities in various sectors, including defence, agriculture technology, pharmaceuticals, food processing, mining, infrastructure, and technology.

In addition to trade, the two countries are planning to establish a bilateral startup bridge and foster partnerships in critical minerals and coal gasification. Indian officials anticipate that the proposed India-European Union trade agreement will present further opportunities for exports and investment.

Defence cooperation is a central pillar of this partnership, with both nations working towards an agreement on the protection and exchange of classified information to facilitate closer defence-industrial collaboration. Plans are underway to initiate a defence industry dialogue and a counterterrorism dialogue, with prospects for joint manufacturing of military equipment, drones, and satellite technologies.

The discussions also touched on regional and international issues, notably the Russia-Ukraine conflict and developments in West Asia. Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving peace, a stance welcomed by Polish officials who support New Delhi’s calls for a negotiated solution to the Ukraine conflict.

The meeting serves as a significant step in fortifying India-Poland relations, with both governments committed to expanding trade, enhancing strategic cooperation, and building more resilient supply chains. The leaders also acknowledged the longstanding people-to-people connections, including Poland’s support to Indian students evacuated from Ukraine in 2022 and historical ties dating back to the Second World War.
