If the desired username is unavailable, WhatsApp will offer alternative options through its built-in generator. Importantly, the design of this system ensures privacy, as there will be no public directory of usernames. This means users can only be contacted by those who are aware of their exact username.
To reserve a username, users will need to update their app and navigate to Settings, then Account, followed by Username. The platform will inform users once the feature is available in their specific region. Given WhatsApp’s vast user base, which numbers in the billions, early reservations are encouraged to secure popular usernames due to their high demand.
Furthermore, WhatsApp is introducing an additional privacy feature known as the “username key,” which serves as an extra layer of security.
