WhatsApp Introduces Usernames: A Tech Leap to Privacy in Messaging

WhatsApp is making a significant change to its communication platform by introducing a new privacy feature that allows users to connect using usernames instead of phone numbers. This development signals a major shift in the way interactions occur on the app. The feature is being implemented gradually, enabling users to secure unique usernames in anticipation of a comprehensive global launch planned for later this year. This will allow users to initiate conversations using a username, thereby keeping their mobile number private.

Creating a unique handle within the app is straightforward. Users who wish to message someone will only need to know their username, as there will be no visible phone number. If the desired username is unavailable, WhatsApp will offer alternative options through its built-in generator. Importantly, the design of this system ensures privacy, as there will be no public directory of usernames. This means users can only be contacted by those who are aware of their exact username.

To reserve a username, users will need to update their app and navigate to Settings, then Account, followed by Username. The platform will inform users once the feature is available in their specific region. Given WhatsApp’s vast user base, which numbers in the billions, early reservations are encouraged to secure popular usernames due to their high demand.

Furthermore, WhatsApp is introducing an additional privacy feature known as the “username key,” which serves as an extra layer of security. This key can be shared separately, allowing users to control who can initiate conversations with them. This enhancement is designed to benefit not only individual users but also creators, businesses, and public accounts, facilitating the alignment of their WhatsApp identity with existing handles on platforms like Instagram and Facebook.

WhatsApp emphasizes that adopting usernames is optional. Users who prefer to continue using phone numbers can do so without any changes. As the feature becomes available in different regions, notifications will be sent through the app, ensuring users are informed of the new capabilities.
