In a significant leadership reshuffle at Google DeepMind, co-founder Sir Demis Hassabis is stepping down from his role as chief executive. Having established DeepMind in 2010, Hassabis will transition to become the chair of the organization while also taking on a new position as chief scientist at Alphabet, the parent company of Google. This shift will allow him to step away from everyday management responsibilities and focus his efforts on long-term artificial intelligence research and the aspiration of developing artificial general intelligence.
Koray Kavukcuoglu, who is currently the chief technology officer at DeepMind, will assume the role of head of the organization, carrying the title of senior vice-president. Hassabis emphasized that this move would enable him to dedicate more time to the broader advancement of sophisticated AI technologies, ensuring they are developed in a way that positively impacts humanity. In addition to his new roles, he will continue to serve as the chief executive of Isomorphic Labs, a company focused on drug discovery that was spun out from DeepMind.
The restructuring coincides with the departure of several senior engineers from Google’s AI division. Notably, Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat are leaving to establish their own venture, Discovery Loop. This new startup aims to concentrate on machine learning, as well as science and engineering research. These exits occur amid an increasingly competitive landscape in the AI industry, where Google faces formidable challenges from rivals such as OpenAI and Anthropic, both of which have achieved substantial progress in AI models and coding technologies.
The leadership changes and high-profile departures mark a pivotal moment for Google’s AI operations as the company strives to enhance its standing in the swiftly evolving race toward advanced artificial intelligence. As the sector continues to grow and innovate, these strategic shifts reflect Google’s intention to maintain a competitive edge and reinforce its commitment to driving forward the development of AI technologies.
