The Indian government has summoned Meta’s global leadership to address several compliance issues, including the inadvertent removal of a Facebook Reel by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, concerns over Instagram’s handling of child sexual abuse material (CSAM), and a proposed username feature on WhatsApp. This meeting, initiated by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), underscores the government’s ongoing concerns about Meta’s adherence to India’s digital regulations.
A significant focus of the discussion will be the temporary removal of Prime Minister Modi’s official content, which was mistakenly taken down despite Meta’s sophisticated content moderation systems. The Reel, which was promptly restored on the same day, dealt with serious topics like the NEET-UG paper leak and proposed measures such as fast-track courts and stricter penalties for exam paper leaks. Meta has reportedly apologized to the Indian government for the error, acknowledging the mistake in the content’s removal.
Another crucial aspect of the talks will be Instagram’s management of CSAM-related content and advertisements. The recent governmental directive to eliminate such material has put pressure on Meta to demonstrate compliance with these orders. The company is expected to provide assurances about its commitment to tackling this sensitive issue and enhancing the platform’s safety for users.
The proposed introduction of a username feature on WhatsApp has also raised alarms within the Indian government. Officials fear that this feature could heighten the risks of impersonation, phishing, identity theft, and other forms of online fraud. Consequently, the government has requested WhatsApp to put the feature on hold pending further consultations to address these concerns.
During the meeting, officials are likely to emphasize the importance of stricter compliance with India’s IT Rules, especially concerning AI-generated content, public order, and platform accountability. The discussions aim to ensure that Meta aligns its operations with the nation’s regulatory framework, reinforcing both user safety and content integrity across its platforms.
