Technological Advancements in AI May Lead to Economic Instability, Warns Governor

Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey has highlighted the potential threats posed by increasingly sophisticated artificial intelligence (AI) systems to the global financial system. In a communication directed at G20 finance ministers and central bank governors, Bailey expressed concerns that the growing autonomy and problem-solving capabilities of advanced AI models might lead to significant economic disruptions.

Bailey, who also serves as the chair of the Financial Stability Board, emphasized that many nations currently lack suitable protocols for overseeing the development and deployment of these advanced AI systems. He stressed the importance of international collaboration to ensure that AI technology is both safely released and utilized.

The governor specifically pointed out cyber risk as a pressing issue, noting that advanced AI could substantially escalate the speed, scale, and financial consequences of cyber threats. The reliance on concentrated technology providers and third-party services could further exacerbate the risk of widespread disruption across financial systems.

Additionally, Bailey cautioned that elevated asset valuations and rising leverage in bond and equity markets could heighten the impact of any significant financial shock. He noted that the strong investor optimism surrounding AI might render markets particularly susceptible to a sudden correction if expectations shift.

Bailey urged global financial authorities to adopt coordinated measures to address AI-related risks and bolster the resilience of the international financial system. His call to action underscores the need for a unified approach to managing the challenges and opportunities presented by the rapid advancement of AI technologies in financial markets.
