British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, before stepping down from his role, has successfully finalized a significant diplomatic achievement by securing the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The announcement of his resignation came shortly after this milestone was reached. During the G7 Summit 2026, Starmer met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and they agreed to implement the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) on July 15. This agreement is poised to enhance the already robust trade relationship between the UK and India, currently valued at approximately £48 billion annually.
Throughout his tenure, Starmer prioritized strengthening the UK’s ties with India, making the trade deal a central goal of his administration. He emphasized the agreement as a pivotal opportunity for economic expansion, citing India’s growing influence in the global economy and the advantages of facilitating more seamless and cost-effective trade between the two nations. As Labour leader, Starmer rebuilt connections with the British Indian community and championed a closer partnership with India, focusing on areas such as trade, security, education, technology, and climate change initiatives.
Before entering the political arena, Starmer had a notable career in law, serving as the Director of Public Prosecutions. He ascended to the role of Prime Minister following Labour’s sweeping victory in the 2024 elections. Despite initial achievements in stabilizing the economy and pushing forward domestic reforms, Starmer’s leadership faced challenges from policy difficulties and political obstacles that eventually undermined his position.
In his resignation speech, Starmer expressed his understanding and acceptance of the parliamentary party’s view that he was no longer the right leader to guide Labour into the forthcoming general election. He conveyed his respect and gratitude for their decision, marking the conclusion of a significant era in British political history.
