India is preparing to host the annual BRICS summit this September as it holds the chairmanship of the influential bloc this year. Scheduled for September 12-13 in New Delhi, the summit will feature the participation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, as confirmed by a Kremlin official. This marks a significant diplomatic engagement, drawing attention to the strategic dialogues between member nations.
President Putin’s presence in New Delhi underscores the importance of the summit, where he is also expected to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping for a bilateral discussion. This meeting on the sidelines indicates the ongoing collaboration and dialogue between Russia and China within the BRICS framework. Putin’s last visit to India was in December 2025 for the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit, highlighting the continued strong relations between the two nations.
Earlier in the month, the BRICS member states convened in New Delhi for a two-day conclave attended by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, setting the stage for the upcoming leaders’ summit. The BRICS bloc, originally comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, has expanded its membership in recent years. In 2024, the group welcomed Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates, with Indonesia joining in 2025.
BRICS has emerged as a formidable global platform uniting 11 prominent emerging economies. Together, these nations represent nearly 49.5% of the global population, about 40% of the world’s GDP, and approximately 26% of global trade. The summit in New Delhi is expected to further solidify cooperation among these diverse economies, addressing global challenges and enhancing mutual economic growth.
