Modi to Explore Tech Collaboration with Indonesia for Critical Minerals

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is slated to embark on a visit to Indonesia next week, where he will engage in discussions with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. A primary focus of their dialogue is expected to center on cooperation in the field of critical minerals. This visit underscores India’s strategic intent to bolster its supply chains for essential minerals and to fortify economic ties with Indonesia.

Indian Ambassador Sandeep Chakravorty has highlighted that the two nations are in the process of developing several memorandums of understanding. These agreements encompass a range of sectors, including critical minerals, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, education, and space. While some accords are anticipated to be finalized during Modi’s visit, others remain under negotiation.

India is keen on deepening its collaboration with Indonesia to expand the processing and manufacturing of critical minerals. The envisioned partnership would involve setting up production facilities in Indonesia, ensuring a steady supply of these minerals for the Indian market and for global exports. Discussions are also progressing on potential joint ventures with Indonesian partners to facilitate this initiative.

Indonesia, recognized as the world’s leading producer of nickel, has emerged as a pivotal ally for nations aiming to secure a stable supply of critical minerals vital for electric vehicles, batteries, and other advanced technologies. The country mandates that nickel be processed domestically prior to export, thereby promoting investment in its downstream industries.

This upcoming visit by Modi reflects a broader strategy by India to reduce reliance on external sources for critical minerals while simultaneously enhancing its economic cooperation with Indonesia. By doing so, India aims to not only strengthen its own supply chains but also to play a more significant role in the global market for these essential resources.
