Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Indonesia, aiming to enhance the strategic, economic, and maritime ties between India and one of its key Indo-Pacific partners. This visit underscores the intent of India and Indonesia, both being the largest democracies in the region and members of the G20, to expand their cooperation in crucial areas such as trade, technology, digital governance, healthcare, defense, and maritime security.
This visit builds on the momentum from Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s visit to India in January 2025, marking the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations. During that visit, a series of agreements were signed focusing on health, digital cooperation, maritime security, and cultural exchanges. Despite these strong historical ties, bilateral trade remains around $30 billion, with both countries eager to explore greater economic potential.
India is particularly interested in increasing its investment in Indonesia, especially in sectors such as critical minerals, manufacturing, renewable energy, and food security. Digital collaboration is likely to be a major area of focus, with Indonesia showing interest in initiatives like India’s Digital Public Infrastructure and digital commerce. Both nations are considering partnerships in artificial intelligence, fintech, cybersecurity, digital payments, and support for small businesses.
Maritime security is anticipated to be another priority area for cooperation. Plans include strengthening collaboration in the strategically vital Strait of Malacca, enhancing naval cooperation, improving maritime domain awareness, and expanding defense-industrial partnerships. As Indonesia seeks to diversify its defense suppliers, new opportunities could arise for India’s defense sector.
Additionally, the visit is expected to foster greater people-to-people connections through enhanced academic, business, and cultural partnerships, contributing to a more comprehensive and enduring relationship between the two countries. These efforts aim to deepen ties and create a robust framework for long-term collaboration between India and Indonesia.
