Malaysia is on standby to send DNA experts to Nepal, pending approval, to assist in the identification of victims following severe floods and landslides. Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan announced that Malaysia has sought permission for the deployment, with plans to commence DNA identification once search and rescue operations in the region conclude. The specialists will undertake the task of matching DNA samples from the bodies recovered with those collected from families of missing Malaysian nationals.
In preparation for this operation, DNA samples have already been collected from the relatives of 55 Malaysians who remain unaccounted for after the natural disasters. The urgency of the situation has necessitated quick burials of some recovered bodies due to limited facilities, highlighting the critical role of DNA testing in confirming identities.
The Malaysian team, comprising 11 personnel, is equipped with 12.4 tonnes of rescue equipment. This includes detection tools, advanced communication systems, high-capacity drones, and specialized equipment for tunnel rescues. Additionally, the team has brought along a four-wheel-drive vehicle and a 10-tonne truck to aid in their mission.
With these resources, Malaysia aims to bolster search and rescue efforts while facilitating the DNA identification process. The ultimate goal is to locate missing individuals and provide closure to families by confirming the identities of their loved ones.
