Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced a series of rallies across the state, organized by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from October 13 to 31. The rallies aim to counter what the BJP describes as Congress’s efforts to undermine democratic institutions. Sarma conveyed this during a press briefing in Guwahati, highlighting the importance of these events in supporting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and reinforcing public trust in constitutional bodies.
Sarma criticized the Congress party and other opposition groups, accusing them of using political motives to challenge the legitimacy of institutions like the Election Commission and the Supreme Court. He emphasized that the rallies would be peaceful demonstrations staged at district headquarters to promote confidence in these institutions.
A key point of contention is Congress’s opposition to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Sarma argued that this process is essential for addressing issues related to voter lists and illegal immigration in Assam. He accused Congress of hindering efforts to maintain the integrity of the electoral process.
In a pointed critique, Sarma targeted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of applying inconsistent standards to election results based on the winning party. He also criticized Gandhi’s approach to the Supreme Court, suggesting that political pressure should not be exerted on constitutional institutions.
The BJP intends for these rallies to focus on supporting democratic institutions while opposing Congress’s stance on electoral and constitutional matters. The announcement of the rallies comes amid heightened political tensions between the BJP and Congress over electoral processes, the independence of institutions, and immigration issues in Assam.
