India Condemns US Green Card Delays, Defends Indian Tech Workers’ Contributions

India has voiced strong opposition to the recent U.S. decision to suspend certain Green Card application processes for eight major technology companies, arguing that the move undermines the economic partnership between the two nations. The restrictions, impacting companies such as Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, and Microsoft, target the Permanent Labor Certification (PERM) program, which facilitates employment-based permanent residency for foreign workers in the United States.

The Ministry of External Affairs of India highlighted that skilled professionals from India significantly contribute to the U.S. economy, particularly in the technology sector, by driving innovation, research, and competitiveness. The ministry emphasized that the movement of these professionals benefits both countries, fostering job creation and productivity.

Additionally, India responded to U.S. Vice President JD Vance’s comments, which described foreign professionals as “indentured servants.” The Indian government criticized this language as “unwarranted and deeply offensive,” arguing that it fails to recognize the expertise and contributions of Indian professionals, while also carrying negative historical connotations.

While the suspension does not directly affect the validity of existing H-1B visas or the immigration status of current holders and their dependents, it could lead to delays or complications for employees of the affected companies seeking Green Cards. This development adds to the ongoing trade and immigration tensions between India and the United States, with Indian technology firms relying heavily on skilled-worker visa programs to operate in the U.S.

The U.S. decision could complicate permanent-residency plans for many employees and create additional uncertainty for companies that depend on highly skilled foreign workers. India continues to advocate for the recognition of the vital role immigrants play in shaping American economic growth and innovation.
