Veteran actor Nana Patekar, celebrated for his intense performances and unique contribution to Indian cinema, passed away at the age of 75 on October 8, 2026, in Goa. Patekar’s career spanned nearly five decades, during which he redefined the conventional image of a Bollywood hero through his portrayal of complex and emotionally charged characters.
Born as Vishwanath Patekar in Maharashtra in 1951, he began his film journey with the 1978 Hindi film “Gaman” and later became a prominent figure in Marathi cinema. His notable performance in “Aaj Ki Awaz” (1984) set the stage for his reputation as an actor capable of delivering intense roles, and “Ankush” (1986) further solidified this image. Patekar’s work in “Salaam Bombay!” earned critical acclaim, while his role in “Parinda” garnered him the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor.
Patekar’s versatility allowed him to transition from supporting roles to leading performances in films like “Tiranga” and “Krantiveer,” with the latter earning him the National Film Award for Best Actor. In 1991, he ventured into filmmaking with his directorial debut “Prahaar,” a film that later gained a dedicated following. Throughout his career, Patekar demonstrated an ability to navigate between various genres, from serious dramas and action films to comedies, such as his role in “Welcome” (2007).
Despite his professional success, Patekar’s career was not without controversy. In 2018, actress Tanushree Dutta accused him of sexual harassment during the filming of “Horn ‘Ok’ Pleassss.” Patekar denied the allegations, and Mumbai police filed a closure report citing insufficient evidence. The incident became a significant part of the broader #MeToo movement in India.
Regardless of the controversies, Patekar remained a respected figure in the film industry, known for his distinctive acting style and dedication to a wide range of roles. His contributions to both Hindi and Marathi cinema have left a lasting impact, influencing generations of performers and securing his status as one of India’s most distinctive actors.
