Faced with escalating fuel prices, diminished travel demand, and regional tensions, several major Indian airlines, including Air India, IndiGo, and Air India Express, are poised to scale back their domestic flight operations starting June. These carriers are adjusting their networks to manage increased operational costs effectively.
Air India plans a significant reduction of about 22% in its domestic flight frequencies, an effort that follows a prior decrease of approximately 27% in its international routes. The airline’s strategy is aimed at counteracting the effects of persistently high aviation fuel prices and other challenging conditions. Currently operating around 3,600 domestic flights weekly, Air India has assured affected passengers that they will be accommodated through alternative flights, date changes, or refunds where applicable.
Similarly, Air India Express will implement a minor cutback in domestic services, forecasted to remain below 10% of its network. Despite these reductions, the airline is focused on expanding services on select domestic and international routes, making strategic adjustments to better align capacity with demand. The airline boasts a network of over 3,000 weekly flights, including approximately 500 weekly services connecting India to West Asia.
IndiGo is also preparing to decrease its domestic operations, with anticipated reductions ranging from 10% to 13% compared to the previous quarter, as noted by industry officials. The airline industry’s increased costs stem largely from higher aviation turbine fuel prices, exacerbated by ongoing tensions in West Asia. Additionally, Indian carriers are incurring further expenses due to extended flight routes necessitated by the continued closure of Pakistani airspace to Indian airlines.
As the situation unfolds, industry analysts suggest that airlines will maintain a close watch on fuel costs and passenger demand trends before deciding when to restore flight frequencies to previous levels. This cautious approach reflects the ongoing challenges the aviation sector faces in adapting to fluctuating market conditions.
