In a groundbreaking move towards eco-friendly rail transport, India has inaugurated its first hydrogen fuel cell train. Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially launched the train in Jind, Haryana, highlighting a major advancement in the nation’s pursuit of green energy solutions.
This innovative project encompasses a comprehensive hydrogen production and refuelling system, alongside a locomotive powered by fuel cells. Hydrogen is generated on-site through an electrolyzer, then compressed, stored, and delivered to the train via a specially designed refuelling station. This system is equipped with high-pressure compressors, hydrogen dispensers, and an automated fuel management platform that ensures the process of compression, storage, and dispensing is both efficient and safe.
According to officials, this initiative underscores India’s growing proficiency in establishing domestic hydrogen infrastructure, aligning with the objectives of the country’s National Green Hydrogen Mission. Plans are underway to deploy similar hydrogen refuelling systems on heritage rail lines, such as the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, Kalka-Shimla Railway, and Nilgiri Mountain Railway.
Hydrogen fuel cell trains operate by merging hydrogen and oxygen to generate electricity, emitting only water vapor as a byproduct. This technology presents a cleaner substitute for diesel-powered trains and is anticipated to significantly contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions within the transportation sector.
