The government of West Bengal has taken a significant step in preserving cultural heritage by providing financial assistance to Rath Yatra committees across the state. In a groundbreaking initiative, the state has allocated ₹5 lakh each to 60 committees to aid in the restoration and maintenance of ancient chariots used during the Rath Yatra celebrations. This is the first instance of the government offering direct funding for such festivities.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari emphasized the urgency of renovating the traditional wooden chariots, many of which have been in existence for centuries. He highlighted the necessity for these funds to be utilized in the repair and preservation efforts to maintain their historical significance.
In addition to this financial support, the government has made arrangements for flower petals to be showered via helicopters over the devotees during the 30-km Shravan Yatra at Tarakeshwar in Hooghly district. This gesture is part of a broader effort to enhance the pilgrimage experience. Furthermore, the state will establish Seva Kendras at 75 fair locations to offer pilgrims essential services, including medical aid, police assistance, and access to drinking water.
Looking ahead, the state government has plans to extend financial assistance to even more Rath Yatra committees, ensuring wider support for these cultural events. Additionally, a substantial investment of ₹1,000 crore is planned over the next three years for the development of the Bengal Shaktipeeth Circuit. This project aims to promote pilgrimage, restore historic temples, and boost religious tourism in the region.
