Indian Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, traveled to Doha to express India’s condolences following the death of Qatar’s Father Amir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. This visit highlighted the deep and enduring ties between India and Qatar.
During his time in Doha, Rijiju met with Qatar’s Amir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, conveying condolences on behalf of the Indian government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Rijiju praised the late Father Amir as a visionary leader who significantly contributed to Qatar’s progress and played a vital role in enhancing the strategic partnership between the two nations.
Rijiju also emphasized the profound respect and mourning felt by the Indian community in Qatar for the Father Amir’s passing, acknowledging his remarkable contributions. Prime Minister Modi had previously paid homage to Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, recognizing him as a true friend of India and applauding his efforts in strengthening bilateral relations.
As a gesture of respect, India observed a national day of mourning on July 13, 2026. The national flag was flown at half-mast on government buildings, and official entertainment activities were suspended as a tribute to the late leader.
