Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced the launch of the “Namo Yamuna” ferry service on the Yamuna River, set to commence just before the Chhath Puja festival, which runs from November 13 to 16. This new service aims to enhance the festive experience for residents and visitors, providing a scenic route along the riverbanks.
The ferry route will stretch approximately five kilometers between Sonia Vihar and Jagatpur, offering passengers views of the ghats and natural landscapes. Tickets for the one-hour cruise are expected to be priced at around ₹500 per person. The project, initially scheduled for launch earlier in the year, faced delays due to incomplete work, but preparations are now in full swing.
Gupta recently inspected the ferry at Sonia Vihar Sports Club and visited Sur Ghat, the site for Chhath Puja celebrations. The area is being developed into a picnic destination, allowing families to gather and enjoy the riverside surroundings while participating in the festivities. The ferry service is part of a broader initiative to promote the Yamuna as a recreational space.
The vessel, named Island Boats 40 (IB 40), was constructed by Mumbai-based Inspiration Marine Pvt Ltd. It features a catamaran-style hull designed for stability in the river’s shallow stretches. The ferry’s jetties will be equipped with boarding facilities, ticket counters, and waiting areas to ensure a smooth experience for travelers.
