Nepal PM Proposes Joint Climate Resilience Mechanism with India and China

Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra “Balen” Shah has urged for a cooperative approach involving Nepal, India, and China to tackle the escalating climate risks in the Himalayan region. Speaking at the 81st United Nations General Assembly, Shah emphasized the urgent need for a Himalayan Climate Resilience Mechanism to address the threats posed by climate change, including glacier-related disasters, floods, and landslides.

Shah highlighted the significance of the Hindu Kush Himalayan region, which provides vital resources such as water and supports the livelihoods of nearly two billion people. He warned that rising temperatures are exacerbating environmental vulnerabilities, necessitating immediate collaborative action from the countries within the region.

The proposed mechanism would involve the three countries in sharing satellite data and technical expertise, monitoring hazardous glacial lakes, enhancing early-warning systems, and coordinating cross-border assistance during climate-induced disasters. Shah stressed that such regional cooperation is crucial for improving preparedness and response to climate-related emergencies.

This proposal follows the recent devastating floods in Nepal’s Himalayan region, which resulted in significant destruction and loss of life. The disaster underscored the urgent need for stronger climate resilience measures and international cooperation, according to Shah.

Shah also called for increased support for Nepal’s ongoing recovery and reconstruction efforts. He expressed gratitude to India, China, and other international partners for their assistance following the floods.
