Modi’s December Canada Visit Highlights Tech Collaboration Amid Trade Progress

The anticipated visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Canada in December could significantly advance the economic relationship between the two nations, as they aim to finalize a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) by the end of 2026. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the potential visit while attending the United Nations General Assembly in New York, highlighting the importance of trade, investment, and diplomatic ties between the countries.

The CEPA negotiations, which are set to enter their fifth round on October 5, have been identified as a key element in doubling bilateral trade to C$70 billion annually by 2030. In 2025, trade in goods and services between India and Canada amounted to C$30.4 billion. Both nations have expressed a commitment to accelerating discussions, with the shared goal of concluding the agreement by 2026.

Modi’s visit would mark his first standalone bilateral trip to Canada since 2015, although he attended the G7 summit there in June 2025. During that visit, Modi and Carney discussed strengthening relations. The December visit is expected to coincide with the G20 summit in Miami, providing a strategic opportunity to further diplomatic efforts.

Efforts to repair and enhance the India-Canada relationship have gained momentum following several years of diplomatic strain. Prime Minister Carney’s visit to India in March 2026 set the stage for renewed collaboration, with agreements to fast-track CEPA negotiations and explore joint ventures in energy, technology, artificial intelligence, and defense.

As both countries work towards a stronger bilateral relationship, the CEPA is seen as a critical framework for expanding trade and investment opportunities. The ongoing negotiations and high-level visits underscore the strategic importance of the partnership, promising mutual economic benefits and deeper cooperation across various sectors.
