China has expressed approval of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s comments regarding India’s independent foreign policy following his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping during the BRICS Summit in New Delhi. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun highlighted that Beijing appreciates Modi’s assertion that India’s relationship with China will not be swayed by other countries. The meeting underscored a mutual understanding that China and India should act as partners, supporting each other’s development.
President Xi Jinping remarked on the distinct national circumstances of both China and India, emphasizing the importance of focusing on collaboration while handling differences with mutual respect and understanding. This approach aims to enhance cooperation by managing discord without allowing it to escalate into disputes.
India emphasized that maintaining peace and stability along the border is crucial for the advancement of bilateral relations. Prime Minister Modi reiterated the necessity of adhering to existing agreements and understandings regarding border issues. Both leaders affirmed their commitment to seeking a fair and mutually acceptable resolution to the boundary dispute.
The bilateral meeting follows years of border tensions, particularly along the Line of Actual Control. Notably, in October 2024, India and China reached an agreement to disengage troops from several contentious areas in the Ladakh sector, marking a significant step towards alleviating a longstanding military standoff.
