Officials from Japan explained that Modi actually referred to Takaichi as “my sister” in Hindi. The official English translation rendered this as “my younger sister.” However, as the translation was relayed from Hindi to English and subsequently to Japanese, it was inaccurately conveyed as “beautiful sister.” This translation error influenced Takaichi’s comments during the press conference.
Prime Minister Takaichi, trusting the translation she was given, reiterated the phrase, expressing that she and Modi had agreed to maintain their relationship akin to that of a brother and sister. Her statement was based on the mistaken interpretation, highlighting the challenges of simultaneous relay interpretation, especially across multiple languages.
Despite the mix-up, Japanese officials have assured that the incident has not affected the diplomatic relations between Japan and India. They confirmed that India has not raised any concerns regarding the mistranslation.
